What are the reasons for hair loss on a dog other than shedding?

My Chow/Spaniel mix is losing her hair in two different spots about two inches wide on her hind quarters. She has a slight skin irritation on the bald spots. I have seen her scratching in that area. She's 18 months old. She has been spade and lives in a fenced in back yard with her four litter mates. She's the only one with this kind of problem. I would like to find something to put on her that doesn't sting or cause her any pain, if possible.

Mange, allergies, possibly flea allergy dermatitis. Have you checked your dogs for fleas? Even is all of them have fleas, your one pup could be the only one that is allergic to them. DO NOT get meds OTC please. Only a vet can properly diagnose what's going on with your dog. Your best bet is to go to the vet and see what they find. It could be something completely different than any of us here think.

MANGE IS A POSSIBILITY, EEEKKKK. BUT ANY NON-STEROIDAL ANTI-ITCH CREAM WILL KEEP HER FROM ITCHING SO SEVERELY AND THE HAIR WILL PROBABLY GROW BACK.

There are different kinds of mange. One kind is not contaigous, but seems to happen most often in negelected dogs with a poor diet. You could be dealing with a hot spot. I'd try finding a product to treat hot spots at the pet store.
